1. Regenesys

Regenesys Business School is a free, fully accredited, internationally recognised business education for South Africans. Headquartered in the heart of Sandton, Johannesburg, it was the first business school to offer a MBA qualification on an iPad and iPhone.

How it works

All knowledge, information and learning material Regenesys offer are free. You can access the free education material by signing up on www.mtn.education.regenesys.net.

They only charge students to complete the assignments and examination modules of their core business programmes. Attending classes are optional paid features of the programme, however they are required for qualification accreditation.

After you’ve completed the relevant quiz, you’ll receive a certificate and badge of participation. If you would like to write exams and receive the full qualification, which is accredited, you’ll need to enrol in the full qualification and pay the required fees.

2. Wits University

The University of Witwatersrand will offer Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) through non-profit online learning provider edX. WitsX has been open for enrolment since the end of 2015 on edx.org

How it works

Go to the edX website and start browsing through their long list of courses by selecting the subject you’re interested in. Make use of the “Availability” option to refine your search.Read through the course pre-requisites and time commitment before selecting your choice.Then, register for the course and start studying. Everything is done online, including classes, quizzes and exams.

Free Courses

All edX courses are free, however a verified certificate does require a small fee and you’ll need to verify your identity by submitting a copy of your official ID.

Subjects for free online learning include anything from architecture to food and nutrition, and even history.Some of the business courses starting soon on edX:

What you’ll learn

The outcomes of each course are dependent on their degree of difficulty: introductory, intermediate and advanced. For example, the Introduction to Project Management course is of the introductory level and outcomes include gaining core knowledge and applied skills, and understanding why today’s projects are more complex.

Time Investment

The length of time a course requires is dependent on your choice of course. The average course length is eight to ten weeks, with a study commitment of at least eight hours a week.

3. University Of Cape Town

UCT has opted to collaborate with British based MOOC provider, FutureLearn, to launch its own online courses. Currently focusing on healthcare and philosophical concepts.

How it works

Browse FutureLearn’s course list and find a subject you’d like to learn more about. Create your online profile page so your fellow learners can find out more about you; an excellent networking opportunity. FutureLearn will email you to let you know when your course starts. Learn by watching the videos, listening to audio and reading articles. At end of each course you’ll need to complete the relevant tests and assignments.

Most of the courses have an option to buy a Statement of Participation, showing that you took part in the course.Some of the courses, like the ones from UCT, offer university-branded, printed certificates that provide proof of your newly attained skills and knowledge.

Giving learners the opportunity to improve their communication skills by removing language barriers. As an entrepreneur and business owner, understanding and speaking different African languages can be very beneficial.

How it works

Go to Unisa’s free online courses and select the African language you would like to learn first. The course systematically takes you through the vocabulary of a particular theme. Showing a video clip at the end of each theme, in which the context of the given vocabulary is demonstrated. These are not certified courses, but a means to better understand the African people.

How it works

You start by deciding what it is you want to learn about, then browse Alison’s courses and find the one you’re interested in. Once you’ve found your course, you have to register your free account and click on the start course button.

To pass a course you must score the required 80% or over the pass.Once you’ve completed the course you can download your learner-record as proof of accomplishment or order a certificate which Alison will send you via post.

Go to the EO website and choose the course you’d like to take. Click the Enrol Now button and start your free online learning experience. The courses are free and short, no more than a few hours. They do not offer certification, but you’ll gain valuable knowledge. Each module contains reading material, a video and a quiz.
