Grade R Pencil Control Workbook 2027 dlq-971 - front page of the free PDF, mycourses.co.za

This is the Grade R Pencil Control Workbook 2027, a free Grade R pre-writing workbook in PDF format for South African Foundation Phase classrooms and for parents teaching at home. Fourteen pages of pencil control patterns for Grade R, plus a page of notes for the teacher or parent and a certificate at the end. Pencil control is what comes before letter formation: a child who can hold a pencil, start in the right place and pull a line where they mean it will find handwriting in Grade 1 far easier. The file runs to 16 pages and falls under Life Skills. It is set out for the 2027 school year and can be printed as it is.

This document was written and drawn for mycourses.co.za. It is free to print, copy and use in any South African classroom or home. The following document, Grade R Pencil Control Workbook 2027.pdf, is the full document.

Grade R Resource Brief

Grade R Pencil Control Workbook 2027 dlq-971

The Grade R Pencil Control Workbook is a set of pre-writing pattern pages. Every page works the same way: three rows of dotted guides to trace over, then three empty rows where the child repeats the pattern without help. A green dot marks where the pencil starts and a green arrow shows which way it travels. The patterns run from straight lines and sticks through zigzags, waves, bridges and arches to loops and spirals, and the last page uses the stick and the curve that letters are actually built from.
Sixteen A4 pages. Page one is for the adult and explains the order of the pages, the pencil grip, and what to do with a left-handed learner. Pages two to fifteen are the pattern pages. Page sixteen is a certificate. Print single sided, because the child writes straight onto the page. Every page carries a footer linking back to mycourses.co.za, so a printed copy can always be traced back to where it came from.
Ten minutes at a sitting is plenty at this age, and one page is enough. Check the pencil grip before the writing starts. Say the pattern out loud together as the child draws it: up and over, round and round, down and up. Do not skip the three empty rows at the bottom of each page, because that is where the learning actually happens.
