Human Resource Managemen Postgraduate Diploma Course at UKZN

The School of Management, Information Technology and Governance at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) offers the Postgraduate Diploma in Human Resource Management in its Westville Campus. This programme creates a unique learning opportunity where learners not only learn content, but share their real life experiences with fellow mature students. The programme provides an alternative access mostly to people that are employed and who cannot study during working hours. It is a flexible programme with opportunities to interact with the lecturers on a frequent basis.

The Postgraduate Diploma in Human Resource Management is designed to prepare students for the effective management of human resources (HR) and industrial relations (IR). The programme offers a truly innovative framework that examines the traditional functional HR and IR areas from a strategic perspective. The programme adopts a dual approach, which initially provides students with a theoretical framework of strategic human resource management and industrial relations and thereafter, it examines the actual practice and implementation of strategic HR and IR through a discussion of case studies. Both the integrative framework and the actual practice simulated through case studies distinguish the programme from what is currently on the market. This programme is a must for all employees in the corporate sector with specific reference to those who manage employee resources.

CORE MODULES INCLUDE:

Human Resource Management A

Aim: To develop students’ knowledge of human resource management functions leading to sound human resource management practices.

Human Resource Management B

Aim: to give students an appreciation of contemporary issues in human resource management. Topics that are current will be covered with appropriate case studies through active student participation.

Industrial Relations A

Aim: To introduce students to industrial relations management within South Africa in accordance with the Labour Relations Act 1995, freedom of association, organisational rights, and collective bargaining.

Industrial Relations B

Aim: To expose students to employment equity issues as well as dispute resolution processes in the Labour Relations Act 1995 in the context of labour disputes in South Africa

 

Finance and Accounting A    

Aim: to give students an appreciation of accounting concepts and their use by management and to introduce them to the basics of financial decision making

Business Management & Strategy

Aim: to give students an appreciation of the nature of the business organisation and its environment and the concept of management

ELECTIVES

Students may choose two elective modules from the following:

  • Marketing Management
  • Supply Chain Management
  • Bank Management A
  • Financial Management
  • Business Law
  • Special Topics in Management
  • Elements of Entrepreneurship

The range of electives may change depending on demand and lecturer availability.

Lectures are held on Mondays to Thursdays, from 17h30 to 20h30.

The programme can be completed in one year full-time study or two years part-time. Part-time students can commence studies in the second semester.
