Give TWO reasons why adolescents from economically disadvantaged backgrounds may be more vulnerable to risky behaviours

For the Life Orientation Grade 11 Term 3 2025 task, the topic of Risky Behaviour and Situations under Development of the Self in Society explains that socio-economic conditions, such as poverty and poor living environments, can strongly influence the choices young people make. As it has been explained in this topic, adolescents from economically disadvantaged backgrounds often face more challenges that may push them towards risky behaviours, either as a way of coping or due to limited opportunities.

Give TWO reasons why adolescents from economically disadvantaged backgrounds may be more vulnerable to risky behaviours

The two reasons why adolescents from economically disadvantaged backgrounds may be more vulnerable to risky behaviours are:

  1. Poverty and poor living conditions can expose adolescents to unsafe environments, crime, and substance abuse.
  2. Lack of access to education, healthcare, and positive opportunities can limit their choices and make risky behaviour seem like the only option.

As it has been explained under Socio-economic Aspects, low income, poor literacy, and unfavourable social environments can affect lifestyle choices. Living in areas with high crime rates, substance abuse, and violence increases the risk of engaging in unsafe sexual behaviour, drug use, or other harmful activities.

In addition, when adolescents do not have access to good education, proper medical care, or safe recreational activities, they may lack the guidance and support needed to make informed decisions. This can lead them to follow negative influences from peers or the community, making them more vulnerable to risky behaviours.
