Why it is Important to Evaluate Impact Assessment Studies before taking action

The procedure of EIA aims at evaluating, in the sense of identifying and quantifying, the relationship between the proposed work and the environment in which it is to be implemented. This task is carried out by taking information of various kinds (environmental, social, economic, regulatory, etc.) into account to make an informed judgment on the environmental sustainability of the task.

Numerous methods have been proposed for the assessment of environmental impact, many of which emerged during the first half of the 1970s. In the present chapter a specific approach for landfills, based on the works of Cossu et al. (1986) and Andreottola et al. (1989) is presented and commented.
