Careers in Geography and Environmental Studies Field

There are many careers within Geography and Environmental Studies field to choose from. Students who pursued Geography and Environmental Studies field can be employed by the State, non-governmental organisations and the private sector as geographers, development planners and managers, land-use planners, urban managers, environmental managers and Geographical Information System (GIS) users.

Geography is often defined in terms of the two branches of human geography and physical geography. Human geography deals with the study of people and their communities, cultures, economies and interactions with the environment by studying their relations with and across space and place. Physical geography deals with the study of processes and patterns in the natural environment like the atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, and geosphere.

The four historical traditions in geographical research are: spatial analyses of natural and the human phenomena, area studies of places and regions, studies of human-land relationships, and the Earth sciences. Geography has been called “the world discipline” and “the bridge between the human and the physical sciences”.

Below are some of the Geography and Environmental Studies Categories

  • Health GeographyHealth geography is the application of geographical information, perspectives, and methods to the study of health, disease, and health care. The health of human populations reflects the complex interplay between population characteristics and the environment.
  • Environmental Geography: Environmental geography is a branch of geography that examines the spatial aspects of interactions between humans and the natural world.
  • Land Planning: Land use planning involves the scientific, aesthetic, and orderly disposition of land, resources, facilities, and services with a view to securing the physical, economic and social efficiency, and health and well-being of urban and rural communities.
  • Geospatial Technologies: Geospatial technologies, which include Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Global Positioning Systems (GPS), and Remote Sensing are powerful tools used to store, analyze, visualize, and present spatial information. Together with appropriate cartographic techniques and principles, geographers are using geospatial technologies to better understand the interaction of various factors across space.
  • Economic Geography: Economic geography is based upon their diverse knowledge and skills related to location analysis. Economic geographers play a key role in a vast array of business ventures, such as helping to make decisions about where to build the next Walgreens drug store or determining the most time-efficient route for a UPS delivery driver.
