isiXhosa HL Grade 12 Exam Guidelines Scope 2025 – What to Expect

The isiXhosa Home Language exam is divided into three papers. Each paper focuses on different skills: Paper 1 tests comprehension and grammar, Paper 2 assesses literature, and Paper 3 focuses on extended and transactional writing.


Paper 1 – Ulwimi nokuQonda (Language in Context)

Date: Tuesday, 4 November 2025
Duration: 2 hours
Marks: 80

Structure of Paper 1:

  • Section A: Comprehension (30 marks) – Reading passage and answering contextual questions.
  • Section B: Summary (10 marks) – Writing a summary in ±90 words.
  • Section C: Language in Context (40 marks) – Vocabulary, grammar, and sentence structure tested in context.

  3. Number your answers exactly as in the paper.

Paper 3 – Ukubhala (Writing)

Date: Thursday, 6 November 2025
Duration: 2½ hours
Marks: 100

Structure of Paper 3:

  • Section A: Essay (50 marks) – Choice of creative, reflective, or discursive essays.
  • Section B: Longer Transactional Writing (30 marks) – Formal/informal letters, articles, reports, or speeches.
  • Section C: Shorter Transactional Writing (20 marks) – Diary entries, notices, adverts, or dialogues.

Marks are awarded for content, structure, style, and language use.
