This is the Tourism CAPS Document (Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement) for the Further Education and Training (FET) Phase, Grades 10-12, issued by the South African Department of Basic Education. It sets out what must be taught, learnt and assessed in Tourism across Grades 10, 11 and 12, and is relevant for the 2026 and 2027 school years. Tourism is defined in the document as the study of the activities, services and industries that deliver a travel experience to groups or individuals, including the expectations and behaviour of tourists and the economic, social and environmental impact of tourism on South Africa. Core content and skill areas named in the document include tourism sectors, map work, foreign exchange, sustainable and responsible tourism, communication and customer care, and marketing.

This is a 50-page document made up of four sections. Section 1 introduces the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) and the general aims of the South African curriculum, including time allocation across the schooling phases. Section 2 introduces the subject Tourism, its specific aims, the weekly time allocation for the subject, and the requirements and classroom recommendations for offering Tourism. Section 3, the largest section, gives an overview of the nine main topics and provides detailed term-by-term teaching plans for Grades 10 to 12. Section 4 covers assessment, including informal and formal assessment, projects and field trip assignments, tests, examinations, the Practical Assessment Task (PAT), recording, reporting, promotion and moderation.

The subject aims to develop learners’ knowledge of the different tourism sectors, including transport, hospitality, travel organising and support services, and the attractions sector. It aims to build practical skills such as map work, foreign exchange calculations and tour planning, alongside an understanding of sustainable and responsible tourism, marketing, technology in tourism and customer care. The curriculum prepares learners for further study or employment in the tourism industry by emphasising service excellence and awareness of South Africa and the SADC region as tourism destinations.
