Electrical Technology is defined as the understanding and application of electrical and electronic principles, focused on three main areas of specialisation: Electrical, Electronics and Digital Systems. Through theoretical work, practical assessment tasks and simulations, learners develop skills in safe work practices, interpreting circuit diagrams, constructing and troubleshooting circuits, and workshop practice.
The document runs to 50 pages and is organised into four sections. Section 1 introduces the CAPS framework in general, Section 2 introduces Electrical Technology, its specific aims, requirements and career opportunities, Section 3 gives the overview of topics per term and annual teaching plans, and Section 4 covers assessment in Electrical Technology.
Learners are expected to build a firm foundation in electrical and electronic principles, translating theoretical knowledge into practical skills such as sourcing components, constructing and testing circuits, and taking measurements by the end of Grade 12. The subject also prepares learners for apprenticeships, further vocational or engineering study, and entry-level careers in the electrical and electronics industry.
