Engineering Graphics and Design CAPS Document Grades 10-12 kavo-018

This is the Engineering Graphics and Design CAPS Document (Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement) for the Further Education and Training Phase, Grades 10-12, issued by the South African Department of Basic Education. It sets out what must be taught, learnt and assessed in Engineering Graphics and Design across Grades 10, 11 and 12, and is relevant for the 2026 and 2027 school years. The subject teaches drawing principles and techniques within the contexts of Mechanical Technology, Civil Technology and Electrical Technology, including orthographic projection, isometric and perspective drawing, and computer-aided drawing.

The following document, Engineering Graphics and Design CAPS Document Grades 10-12.pdf, is the full document.

CAPS Document Brief

Engineering Graphics and Design CAPS Document Grades 10-12 kavo-018

Engineering Graphics and Design teaches internationally acknowledged principles with both academic and technical applications, emphasising basic knowledge and drawing techniques so learners can interpret and produce drawings within Mechanical Technology, Civil Technology and Electrical Technology contexts. Its main topics include general drawing principles, freehand and instrument drawing, orthographic projections, descriptive and solid geometry, mechanical and civil working drawings, isometric and perspective drawing, electrical diagrams, and the design process using CAD.
The document runs to 58 pages and is organised into four sections. Section 1 introduces the CAPS framework in general, Section 2 introduces Engineering Graphics and Design, its main topics, specific aims and requirements, Section 3 gives the overview of topics per term and annual teaching plans, and Section 4 covers assessment in Engineering Graphics and Design.
Learners are expected to use graphical drawings as the primary means of communication in the technological world, gaining specific content and concepts within Mechanical, Civil and Electrical Technology contexts. The subject also develops various instrument and freehand drawing techniques, the ability to solve technological problems through graphical drawings, and competence in applying the design process and CAD as a drawing method.
