This is the Life Orientation CAPS Document (Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement) for the Further Education and Training (FET) Phase, Grades 10-12, issued by the South African Department of Basic Education. It sets out what must be taught, learnt and assessed in Life Orientation across Grades 10, 11 and 12, and is relevant for the 2026 and 2027 school years. The subject is organised around six interrelated topics covering development of the self in society, social and environmental responsibility, democracy and human rights, careers and career choices, study skills, and physical education.

Life Orientation is defined as the study of the self in relation to others and society, addressing skills, knowledge and values about the environment, responsible citizenship, a healthy and productive life, social engagement, recreation and physical activity, and careers and career choices. It is one of the four compulsory fundamental subjects for the National Senior Certificate.
The document runs to 28 pages and is organised into four sections: Section 1 introduces the CAPS policy in general, Section 2 introduces Life Orientation and its specific aims and time allocation, Section 3 gives an overview of topics per term and annual teaching plans for the six topics across Grades 10 to 12, and Section 4 covers assessment, including informal and formal assessment, the Physical Education Task, and moderation.
Life Orientation aims to guide and prepare learners to respond appropriately to life’s responsibilities and opportunities, and to equip them to interact on a personal, psychological, cognitive, physical, moral, spiritual, cultural and socio-economic level. It also aims to guide learners to make informed decisions about health and well-being, constitutional rights, subject and career choices, and to understand the value of regular participation in physical activity.
