This is the Life Sciences CAPS Document (Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement) for the Further Education and Training (FET) Phase, Grades 10-12, issued by the South African Department of Basic Education. It sets out what must be taught, learnt and assessed in Life Sciences across Grades 10, 11 and 12, and is relevant for the 2026 and 2027 school years. Life Sciences is defined as the scientific study of living things from molecular level to their interactions with one another and their environments, using systematic scientific inquiry such as forming hypotheses and conducting investigations. At school level it draws on sub-disciplines including biochemistry, biotechnology, microbiology, genetics, zoology, botany, physiology and environmental studies.
The document runs to 82 pages and is organised into four sections: Section 1 introduces the CAPS policy in general, Section 2 introduces Life Sciences including its purpose and specific aims, Section 3 sets out the detailed content for Grades 10, 11 and 12, and Section 4 covers assessment requirements, formal assessment programmes, end-of-year examinations, recording, reporting and moderation.
Life Sciences aims to develop learners’ knowledge of key biological concepts, processes, systems and theories, and their ability to investigate phenomena through scientific inquiry. It also aims to build appreciation for the history, importance and applications of Life Sciences in society, including biodiversity, conservation and the impact of biotechnology, alongside relevant language and scientific literacy skills.
