Three Major Rock Types that Make Up the Earth's crust

Hello Geography learners. On this page we will focus on the the three major rock types that make up the Earth’s crust.

When you are asked to list the three major rock types that makeup the Earth’s crust, you should know that the teacher is specifically referring to Igneous Rocks, Sedimentary Rocks, and Metamorphic Rocks. In the next section we explore more on where these rocks are found.

List of the Three Major Rock Types that Make Up the Earth’s crust

The Earth’s crust is the outermost solid layer of our Earth, which is thin and made up of rocks, soil and minerals The whole Earth’ crust is made up of igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. Let’s take a look at where these rocks are found on along the Earth’s crust:

  • Igneous rocks are found mostly in volcanic regions or deep beneath the surface where magma cools and solidifies, along the Earth’s crust.
  • Sedimentary rocks are found on or near the Earth’s surface, especially in river beds, lakes, deserts, and oceans. These rocks form from the layers of sand, mud, and organic material that get compressed over time.
  • Metamorphic rocks are found deep underground, where intense heat and pressure from the Earth’s interior change existing rocks. Also exposed at the surface in mountainous areas where uplift has brought them up.

Look at the different layers of Earth below, so that you can understand the Earth’s crust, as compared to other layers of Earth:
