Program of Assessment for Foundation Phase: Term 1, Term 2, Term 3, and Term 4

The 2024 Programme of Assessment for the Foundation Phase outlines a comprehensive approach to evaluating student progress throughout the school year. This program is designed to ensure a well-rounded assessment of each student’s learning experience, incorporating oral, practical, and written tasks. The chosen assessment forms vary according to the term and grade, with the aim of covering the necessary concepts, content, and knowledge/skills to be assessed.

Foundation Phase Programme of Assessment Overview:

In the Foundation Phase, the program of assessment (POA) consists of one Formal Assessment Task per subject per term, totaling four formal assessment tasks per grade. It is essential to note that assessment in the Foundation Phase is a continuous process, with School Based Assessment accounting for 100% of the evaluation. This continuous assessment approach allows for more accurate and in-depth monitoring of student progress, ensuring that learners receive adequate support and opportunities for improvement throughout the academic year.

Program of Assessment for Foundation Phase per Term for all Subjects:

The Program of Assessment for the Foundation Phase spans across four terms, covering Grade 1, Grade 2, and Grade 3 for the following subjects: Mathematics, Home Language, First Additional Language, and Life Skills. The assessment tasks for each subject are designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of students’ learning and development in the Foundation Phase. These tasks are aligned with the curriculum, allowing teachers to evaluate students’ mastery of essential knowledge and skills in a structured and consistent manner.

Term 1 Assessment:

In the first term, students will be assessed on the early stages of their learning journey in the Foundation Phase. Teachers will focus on evaluating the students’ grasp of basic concepts and their ability to apply this knowledge in various contexts. Oral, practical, and written tasks will be used to assess the students’ progress in Mathematics, Home Language, First Additional Language, and Life Skills.

Term 2 Assessment:

The second term’s assessment will build upon the students’ progress from the first term, with a continued emphasis on their understanding and application of foundational concepts. Teachers will utilize a combination of oral, practical, and written tasks to evaluate students’ performance in each subject area. The assessment tasks in Term 2 will also begin to explore more complex concepts and skills, preparing students for the challenges they will face in subsequent terms.

Term 3 Assessment:

In the third term, the assessment tasks will become more advanced, focusing on the students’ ability to integrate and apply the knowledge and skills they have acquired throughout the year. The assessment tasks will be tailored to each subject area, ensuring a comprehensive evaluation of the students’ progress in Mathematics, Home Language, First Additional Language, and Life Skills.

Term 4 Assessment:

The final term’s assessment will be the culmination of the students’ learning journey in the Foundation Phase. It will include a comprehensive evaluation of their progress throughout the year, with a particular focus on the mastery of essential knowledge and skills. Teachers will use a combination of oral, practical, and written tasks to assess the students’ performance in Mathematics, Home Language, First Additional Language, and Life Skills, ensuring that they are prepared for the next phase of their education.
