Technology is defined as the use of knowledge, skills, values and resources to meet people’s needs and wants by developing practical solutions to problems, taking social and environmental factors into consideration. The document defines the design process skills (investigating, designing, making, evaluating and communicating) and the four core content areas: Structures, Processing of Materials, Mechanical Systems and Control, and Electrical Systems and Control.
The document runs to 88 pages across four sections: Section 1 covers background, overview, general curriculum aims and time allocation; Section 2 introduces Technology, its purpose, specific aims, unique features, core content areas and teaching methodology; Section 3 sets out the focus content, concepts and skills term by term for Grade 7 (pages 14-21), Grade 8 (pages 22-29) and Grade 9 (pages 30-37); and Section 4 covers assessment, including the Mini Practical Assessment Task (mini-PAT), tests and examinations.
By working through this CAPS document, teachers are equipped to help learners apply the design process to solve technological problems creatively, develop practical skills in structures, processing, and mechanical and electrical systems, appreciate the interaction between technology, society and the environment, and build a foundation for FET subjects such as Civil, Mechanical and Electrical Technology, and Engineering Graphics and Design.
