The document defines Coding as the process of creating a logical set of instructions that a human or computing device can execute, Robotics as the design, operation and use of devices and robots that can be programmed to perform tasks autonomously or under direct control, and Digital Concepts as the range of digital literacy skills, digital citizenship and digital awareness that let learners use digital technologies responsibly.
The document runs to 168 pages and is organised into four sections plus annexures: Section 1 introduces the CAPS policy and time allocation; Section 2 covers the definition, aims, skills and content of Coding and Robotics, including its concepts, teaching approach and content-area overview; Section 3 provides content-specific clarification per grade and term for Grades 7, 8 and 9; and Section 4 covers assessment, followed by annexures on terminology, assessment examples and teaching resources.
The subject aims to develop learners computational thinking and design thinking skills to solve problems creatively, and to build critical thinking, collaboration, communication and innovation abilities. It also seeks to instil ethical and effective digital citizenship, a critical awareness of how technology impacts society, and to prepare learners for future careers in STEAM-related fields.
