Mathematics is defined in the document as a language that uses symbols and notations to describe numerical, geometric and graphical relationships, and as a human activity involving observing, representing and investigating patterns. The curriculum organises content into five content areas: numbers, operations and relationships; patterns, functions and algebra; space and shape (geometry); measurement; and data handling.

The curriculum aims to develop learners critical awareness of how mathematics is used in social, environmental, cultural and economic contexts, along with confidence and competence in dealing with mathematical situations.
