The Grade R Phonics Flashcards are a cut out card set for teaching letter sounds. In Grade R a child learns the sound a letter makes long before they learn what the letter is called, so the cards are built around the sound: hold up the a card and say the short sound as in apple, not the letter name. Each card has an original line drawing, the small and capital letter side by side, and the keyword underneath.

Ten A4 pages. Page one is for the adult and sets out five games to play with the cards. Pages two to eight hold the twenty six cards, four to a page, with a grey cutting line around each one. Page nine is an alphabet sound chart for the wall. Page ten is a listening worksheet where the child writes the first letter of each picture. Print on card if you can, or paste onto cereal box cardboard. Every page carries a footer linking back to mycourses.co.za, so a printed copy can always be traced back to where it came from.

Start with the sounds the school is teaching that week rather than working through a to z. Sound of the day, find the card, odd one out and build a word are all set out on page one. Once a few sounds are known, put c, a and t side by side and push the cards together slowly while you say the word: that is the moment reading starts.
