The Grade R Report Card is a blank reporting template for the reception year. Grade R is not a year of tests: the teacher watches the child at work and at play over the whole term and records what the child can do alone, what they can do with help, and what is still coming. The template uses a four point scale, from 1 for not achieved to 4 for outstanding, and leaves a block blank where a skill was not assessed that term.

Four A4 pages. Page one holds the learner details, an attendance table for the four terms, and the rating scale explained in plain language for parents. Page two covers Home Language and Mathematics, ten skills each. Page three covers Life Skills: Beginning Knowledge, Personal and Social Well-being, Creative Arts and Physical Education. Page four holds a comment box for every term, the end of year statement, and space for the teacher, principal and parent to sign. Every page carries a footer linking back to mycourses.co.za, so a printed copy can always be traced back to where it came from.

Print it double sided on good paper and fill it in by hand. Schools are free to change the skill lists to match their own Grade R programme. When you hand it to a parent, walk them through page one first: a rating of 2 in the first term is ordinary and is not a reason for alarm, and the report says so in writing.
