This is the Electrical Technology CAPS Document (Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement) for the Further Education and Training Phase, Grades 10-12, issued by the South African Department of Basic Education. It sets out what must be taught, learnt and assessed in Electrical Technology across Grades 10, 11 and 12, and is relevant for the 2026 and 2027 school years. The subject focuses on three main areas of specialisation, namely Electrical (Power Systems), Electronics and Digital Electronics.
The following document, Electrical Technology CAPS Document Grades 10-12.pdf, is the full document.

Electrical Technology CAPS Document Grades 10-12 kavo-003
Electrical Technology is defined as a subject focusing on the understanding and application of electrical and electronic principles. It covers three specialisation areas: Electrical (Power Systems), which deals with heavy current applications such as domestic and industrial installations; Electronics, which covers analogue and light current applications; and Digital Electronics, which covers programmable ICs, microcontrollers and robotics.
The document runs to 120 pages and is organised into four sections. Section 1 gives the background, overview and general aims and time allocation of the South African curriculum, Section 2 defines Electrical Technology, its specific aims, subject requirements and career opportunities, Section 3 sets out the content outline per term for Electrical, Electronics and Digital specialisations across Grades 10 to 12, and Section 4 covers assessment, including the Practical Assessment Task (PAT).
The subject aims to give learners a firm foundation in electrical, electronic and digital principles, developing practical skills such as safe work practices, reading and interpreting circuit diagrams, constructing and testing circuits, and workshop practice. It aims to prepare learners for career pathways as electricians, technicians or engineers by combining theoretical work with practical assessment tasks and simulations.
