Answers:

Here is the information presented in a table format:

QuestionColumn AAnswer (Column B)
(a)Mr PhillipsC – the headmaster of Noordgesig Primary
(b)Meneer CarelseE – a teacher at Noordgesig Primary
(c)David RandolphA – tries restoring his family’s honour
(d)Dick PetersB – a victim of Bobby’s teasing

Refer to lines 1–2 (“Michael was again … peace of mind”)

(a) Identify the figure of speech used in these lines.
Answer: Personification/Metaphor

(b) Explain why the figure of speech is relevant in this extract.
Answer: Just as corrosion eats away at metal, the issue of the identity of Salome’s child’s father constantly troubles Michael.

What does Michael mean when he says, “You keep stalling, … hide its name?” (lines 3–4)?

Answer: Michael means that Salome keeps avoiding or postponing revealing the father of her child.

Explain the irony in Salome’s words when she says, “I assure you … an honourable man” (line 8).

Answer: The irony is that Salome refers to the father of her child as “honourable,” yet:

  • He and his friends cowardly attack Michael.
  • David Randolph, the father, condemns Michael for being in a relationship with his sister Dora, yet he is guilty of the same act.
  • He does not support the child emotionally or financially.

QUOTE THREE CONSECUTIVE words from the extract to show that Michael once again loses the argument with Salome.

Answer: “felt beaten again”

One of the themes in Forbidden Love is defiance. Discuss this theme.

Answer:

  • Michael, a Black man, defies apartheid laws by engaging in a relationship with a Coloured girl.
  • Meneer Carelse challenges the headmaster’s decision by suggesting that Dora’s illegal relationship should not be exposed.
  • Dora’s mother defies her husband’s beliefs by insisting on seeing her grandchild.

(For full marks, the response must be well-substantiated.)

Refer to the short story as a whole. Do you admire Salome? Discuss your view.

Answer:
Yes.

  • Salome is responsible as she refuses to endanger herself by revealing the father’s identity.
  • She shows care for Michael after his attack.
  • She bravely exposes David Randolph as the father.

No.

  • She puts all responsibility on herself, disadvantaging the child.
  • She does not confide in Michael.
  • She only confronts David after Michael is attacked, which could have been fatal.

(For full marks, the response must be well-substantiated. A combination of both viewpoints is also acceptable.)
