Note: This is just an example to give you an idea of what to include in your map. The layout of your own map will depend on the settlement you have chosen and should be drawn on an A4 size sheet of blank paper. Your sketch map should include suitable labels and a map key.

Step 2: Identifyspecificfeaturesorlandmarks(naturaland/orhuman-made)thatcanbe found throughout your chosen settlement. Name these and mark them on your sketch map.

Step 3: Suggest reasons for the location of your chosen settlement.Remember that settlements start in particular places for different reasons, such as fertile soil, water availability, minerals, job opportunities, transport routes and trade.

Step 4: Write a paragraph explaining whether the population of your chosen settlement has declined or grown in recent years and what some of the reasons for this might be. This part of the project will require some extended research.

Step 5: Identify and explain one social OR environmental lssue that your chosen settlement faces. Your explanation should include what the nature of the issue is and suggest a possible solution. Social issues are about people such as living conditions, unemployment, lack of schools and clinics. Environmental issues are about the environment, such as pollution, destruction of woodland (deforestation), soil erosion and wetland destruction.

Step 6: Produce a list of resources to go along with your project. This should include all the sources which you used to gather information about your chosen settlement. For example, if you gathered information from a website please provide the specific name of this website (Google is not a website – it is a search engine to find different websites). If you found information in a book then you must provide the name of the book and the author, the same applies to information found in a news article. This section should also include a picture of your chosen settlement. The picture can be one which was obtained from google images or taken with your own digital camera or smartphone.
